I write science fiction, fantasy, (and other speculative fiction) under the name E.M. Faulds…
…but you can call me Beth
Hi there! I’ve been writing since I was old enough to hold a pen and make it do what I told it.
I’m neurodivergent, but that’s just one aspect of my life. I grew up in Australia and now call Scotland my home. I’ve been a farmer’s child, a traveller, a martial arts instructor, a computer nerd.
I’ve got plenty of real life stories to tell, but I’ve always had a rich imagination, too.
My Work
British fantasy and science fiction author
I write speculative fiction in short stories and books. This includes the genres of science fiction and fantasy, among others. I grew up with SFF and longed to be able to create new worlds for myself.
British Fantasy Award winner
My latest book is “Under the Moon: Collected Speculative Fiction” which features science fiction, fantasy, and a soupçon of horror, all from the perspective of female characters. It won a 2023 British Fantasy Award (BFA) for Best Collection. A story from its pages, “The Amelioration of Existence in Spite of Truth and Reconciliation”, was chosen for the BSFA award-winning Best of British SF 2022 collection from NewCon Press!

Short stories in magazines
I have also had several short stories published in fantasy and science fiction magazines. I’ve come to love the shorter form of fiction, after years of never imagining I could do it. Now I have several publications in magazines like Strange Horizons, ParSec, and Shoreline of Infinity magazines.
Find out more about my short stories for magazines, and get the links to them on my publications page.
Longer works
My first book was “Ada King”, a novel about a young woman fighting a totalitarian state in a world overcome with climate change. (I wrote it in 2015, long before the current state of things. And yet somehow, it still works.) It’s also about friendship during difficult times and the gift of believing in yourself.
Read more about Ada King here, or if it sounds exactly like your bag, buy it on Amazon straight away by clicking one of these links: Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk.
(I also have a novella which was due to be published last year. However, this has been put on hold thanks to the precarity of the publishing industry. Watch this space, however, as it may be resurrected elsewhere soon.)

The SFFH Community
I’m a member of the Glasgow SF Writers’ Circle and have loved finding my people. They’re a lot of help and I wish I’d met them years sooner than I did. Thanks to their gentle encouragement and support, I’ve gone to conventions, met with people in the industry, and had a good old nerdy chat at the bar with many folk.
I’m also involved with the British Fantasy Society as a committee member. The BFS offers members a great deal of opportunities to connect and meet, promote themselves and find out about the industry. Find out more about this fantastic members’ organisation here.
I go to UK conventions and other events often and try to get involved with the programming where I can. You can perhaps catch me reading a story or discussing a topic on a panel, but almost definitely socialising in the bar.
Other things I’ve done
I’m a web designer as my current dayjob, but I’ve done a lot of things over the years.
I formerly hosted a podcast, Speculative Spaces, where I talked to other SFF authors and industry professionals. It’s since defunct, but it was shortlisted for a Best Audio British Fantasy Award in 2020, as you can read here in the Locus announcement page.
I’ve also appeared as a guest on The Tiny Bookcase podcast, which was a hoot! Hear a story I wrote and performed especially for them and listen to me chat with them on episodes #92 and #93 respectively.
