Awarded at Eastercon each year – the UK’s national science fiction convention – this award is voted on by members of the BSFA and convention attendees.
This year the con was in Birmingham and it was a grand old time. Lots of friends, lots of chats, lots of panels with interesting and insightful speakers.
I was ecstatic to win a BSFA, but of course, it was just one of many brilliant stories that made it to the short list. Congrats to all the other nominees for your outstanding work, and hope you get another chance next year! Check out the shortlist here.
The ceremony was brief but very lovely. Of those who could make it for the ceremony in person, there were plenty of awesome winners, and I have to highlight Neil Williamson – not just as a fellow member of the Glasgow SF Writers’ Circle – but for the first win after fourteen near-misses. It was a very special moment! Starting his speech with a very surprised “Jings!” – iconic. You can watch all the speeches here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAeVUPj9dv4 if you like.
But I also want to shout out Rick Danforth who was nominated five times – what a legend! Dan, I owe you at least one pint next time. And that’s the spirit of community that I love about Eastercon and the other British SFFH conventions – warmth, generosity, grace, and the knowledge that we uplift each other.
By the way, next year’s Eastercon is in Glasgow. Why not check it out if you love talking about all things bookish in science fiction, fantasy, horror and other generally awesome stuff?
